MSE beats a lot of paid AntiVirus products.

Recommended Posts

A Security Analyst working at ParetoLogic feels thats Microsoft Security Essentials is better than a lot of paid AntiVirus products.

Take this pretty common Trojan from fastdor.ru/video/preview_tube.mpeg.exe

Well, only a handful of AV vendors are detecting it. A lot of the big guys don’t detect anything at all! Microsoft picks it up without a problem.

MSE’s main install only takes 11 MB out of your hard drive and t’s DB remains small as well. There are 2 main files for the full DB. mpasbase.vdm (anti-spyware) and mpavbase.vdm (anti-virus) which are respectively just 9 and 29 MB.

While it’s DB remains small as well:

“What is Microsoft’s secret recipe for being so good? What kind of detection are they using that they can maintain such small Databases? I wanna know” says Jerome Segura.

Been using MSE ever since it went official and haven't had any issues yet. Great detection rate, low resource use, great product! Only problem so far is the rather large definition updates for offline updating. I wish they would incorporate proxy support so that I could update online from work...

Sorry to respond to an old topic, but wanted to throw my two cents in.

MSE is a great, light weight program that does the job well. Still prefer AVG though.

+1

I managed to get it to update via a proxy 1 time, but never managed again - I think I had to use something like "Proxifier" software

But yea... It likes to delete cracks and keygens... not good

Yepper! Beside a few crack app that you have to point at not being malicious... MSE is wonderful....Been swearing only by Kaspersky the last 5 years... but now Microsoft have me! Ultra light- weight.. an not a hog on your RAM. Also booting time is shorter. For once ..cudo to Microsoft!
