Hey guys,

I'm hopefully looking at finally getting a Technet account as I'm hoping to get a promotion at work as my boss is leaving.

Problem is, what software does the Professional package include that the Standard package does not? It says it doesn't include Enterprise software, which I'm guessing is Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and other one mainly for Enterprises (Name gives it away really...)

But does that then mean that with a Technet Standard account you still get Windows 7 (HB, HP, Pro, Ult) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (Standard, Web, etc)? At work at the minute we use Windows 7 Pro x84 and x64 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard & Enterprise along with SCCM 2007, Office 2007.

If any of you guys can let me know if a standard subscription would still give me access to the stuff I've listed above that would be great, as if I really needed to evaluate the Enterprise editions you can download them for like 180 day trials direct from MS so why bother paying the extra for Technet Pro?!

Also, just to be sure, the general Enterprise editions just use a KMS for activation but are fundamentally the same editions and do the same jobs.

Thanks again guys,
Michael

Lol, I'd already gone through that page as I'm sure Standard includes the Windows Server 2008 R2 software just not the enterprise editions, but I managed to miss the link "Click here to download the full list of products"!

What a tool lol, thanks again Dave!

For anyone else wondering, click here for the full software list.

haha no probs, there is a way to get Server 2008R2 without Technet anyway - Dan made the thread for BizSpark free MSDN account

You don't get everything, but you do get the servers

Yeah I signed up for that and I could only get Windows Server 2008 R2 - Web, not Standard, Datacenter or Enterprise.

Quickly going through the spreadsheet now and it seems like I'll get everything that doesn't include "Dynamics" or "Enterprise" in the name, so I'd get Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, Office 2007 and 2010, not sure about SCCM but I'm guessing they have listed it as "Configuration Manager" instead of it's full name. I also get Exchange and Sharepoint which we also use.

I think the best thing is if I just ask my boss what he thinks I'd need and really try to get him to help me get his job lol.

Anyways, thanks again Dave!

Hell, I'm happy to just come straight out with it as I've discussed with him when I first started that I wanted to eventually move up to his job so it's worth a try!

Thanks a lot Dave, I'll hold you to that lol!

I was planning on getting a Technet account for the next versions of Windows and Office as my old Student MSDNAA account no longer works but I'm happy to bring it forward if I'm getting a promotion. Hope I get it, it's bad enough I'll end up being on my own running the entire IT system for a few weeks (Please not months!) but then at least that shows I can do the job which can only make me look better.

Well I better get back to reading all my Windows 7/Server 2008 R2/Active Directory books, I knew I should have started them ages ago when I had the time, too busy playing on my xbox or PC lol.

lol, think you might be pushing it for Windows 8 Dave!

I've been reading the MCTS self-paced AD book and it looks like I'll need Enterprise, you can do some with Standard but the later chapters require the Enterprise edition.

If you don't mind giving me a link and a key Dave that would be a great help.

Sorry for the delay!!!

Thanks a lot Dave, I owe you one! Set the download away as soon as I got your PM, god it took ages! 38MB Internet and it downloads at 30-50kbps! At least I've got it now though.

It's looking good at work so I could be getting a TechNet account very soon so if you don't renew I'll return the favour with Windows 8, and anything else you need lol.

Thanks again Dave!

Nice one !

In the words of M_Taylor40 not so long ago "I`ll hold you to that"

Yea I don't know what's up with Technet, I gave my dad the login for my account a few days back for Windows 7 and he said it was doing the same. I`ll have to check it out in a couple weeks, BT has told me the cabinets are fitted to my exchange for Fibre and its on my account for the free upgrade, keep calling every week because it could be on the systems ready to press go any day :D

You won't know what to do with yourself once you get it lol, I sat and started randomly downloading things just for the hell of it!

Now, time to start looking for a new external 2TB+ HDD to backup to... ;)
